Celebrating success, in all its forms

2011 has truly gotten off to a tremendous start for Kurruru and we are all about celebrating the successes of the Company, in all of its many forms.  With Festival Season in Adelaide just passed there is so much success to write about we don't even know where to start, but we've tried to capture everything so far...

Firstly, Kurruru’s young people successfully performed at Survival Day celebrations held at Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, complimenting this with a performance at official Australia Day celebrations. Kurruru’s Dance Ensemble then performed at the Spirit Festival alongside former Kurruru participants and other artists associated with Kurruru.

Rounding up a successful performance season, Kurruru was then invited by Karl Telfer and the Paitya Dancers to perform the Opening Ceremony of WOMADelaide.

Continuing on with our successful run, Kurruru then staged two productions, firstly our latest work Min Min was re-presented as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival taking out the “Best Dance” category at the Fringe Awards and being nominated for the upcoming Australian Dance Awards. Secondly, Kurruru kept the community in stitches as we got together SA’s blackest and deadliest comedians to perform to a sold-out audience at Nunga Funny.

But it is not just these successes that keep doing us all proud, it is also the smaller wins - for example Term 1 has gotten off to a deadly start and our kids and young people are getting ready to perform at Blak Nite 2011 on Saturday 26 March.

These successes are complimented by the wins of our Staff and Board. Firstly, Kurruru Staff Member Michelle Lynch graduated from Curtin University.  Secondly, Traditional Boys Dance Tutor Robert Taylor has been nominated for a Young Achiever Award and thirdly, Kurruru Board Member and community Elder Aunty Pat Waria-Read won the ‘Women Hold up half the Sky Award’ on Australia Day.

As we celebrate these successes, we hope that you  too will celebrate the successes in your life and the life of your family, friends and community.

Supporting young people to dance and sing - both near and afar

Min Min set to weave magic during the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival

Weaving will play a significant role in the background story of Kurruru Youth Performing Arts’ re-staging of its original 2010 production, Min Min, during the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Working with Aboriginal artist Aunty Betty Sumner and traditional Aboriginal dancers Uncle Major Sumner and the Tal-Kin-Jeri Dance Group, Artistic Director Deon Hastie hopes to weave together Kurruru’s young contemporary dancers with multimedia projection and traditional Aboriginal dance and culture.

Min Min is inspired by the stories of the Ngarrindjeri people and their connection to the Murray River, which has always been important to the Ngarrindjeri and continues to increase in importance for wider Australia”, says Deon.

“Weaving is a central part of this connection to the Murray River and so it plays a central part to how the stories in Min Min are presented to audiences.”

Informed by the stories of the Ngarrindjeri people, Min Min will ask audiences to see into the relationship Aboriginal people have with country, exploring the ways Aboriginal perspectives offer explanations to events that differ from those of the mainstream.

Min Min by Kurruru Youth Performing Arts can be seen at Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, 253 Grenfell Street Adelaide, on 23-25 February at 1.30pm and 23-27 February at 7pm.  Tickets are adults $15*, conc/FRINGEbenefits $12*, groups 6+ $10* (*booking fees apply).

For bookings audiences can call FRINGETIX on 1300FRINGE (1300 374 643) or book online at www.adelaidefringe.com.au
