| Supporting young people to dance and sing - both near and afar |
|
At Kurruru we like to support our young people, living up to our motto of living and showcasing proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Over the past two months, Kurruru has continued to make this motto a reality, staging Min Min as part of the Ripples Festival held in Murray Bridge, and extending the realm of possibilities for our performance troupes by securing a number of key performances for them. Min Min was a huge success with larger than expected audiences in attendance to enjoy the picturesque outdoor setting and the spectacular dance work, choreographed by our esteemed Artistic Director, Deon Hastie. Kurruru’s Dance Ensemble members and long-time associate Damien Ralphs shone as they masterfully enacted the choreography of Kurruru’s Artistic Director and renowned Choreographer, Gina Rings. Immediately following the success of Min Min, Kurruru’s Dance Ensemble travelled to the Pilbara, at the invitation of the Michael Leslie Foundation, performing and running workshops with the children and young people there. This was a great development opportunity for the Dance Ensemble and one where great leadership and application of skills was demonstrated by all. Similarly, Kurruru’s two emerging performance troupes – the Boys Traditional Dance Group and the Kurruru Choir – have secured performance opportunities that will ensure their quick development as young performers. The Boys Traditional Dance Group performed at the Tandanya Arts Fair and will perform at the City of Port Adelaide Enfield’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Achievement Awards. The Choir will be involved in a wider Choral Project, as Kurruru partners with Tandanya, working with other choirs such as the Ngarrindjeri Miminar Kykulan (Ngarrindjeri Women's Choir), the Adnyamathanha Women’s Choir and the Kaurna Plains School Choir. |
